Vetting a hotel amenities manufacturer is mostly about knowing where the corners get cut. Not in the quotation. Not in the catalog photos. The damage happens in the minutes between pouring a polyresin part and pulling it out of the silicone mold, and in the pigment weighing that came before. This checklist is written from inside a casting room, not from a procurement textbook.
Cure time is the first thing a rushed workshop steals
Polyresin cures by exotherm. Resin and hardener react, the part heats up, and it has to sit in the mold until that reaction finishes and the piece is dimensionally stable. Demold early and nothing looks wrong. That is the trap. The part leaves the workshop straight-edged and turns up weeks later with a tray bottom that rocks on the table, or a resin tissue box lid that no longer drops flush. Warping in cast resin is almost always a schedule problem, not a formula problem. Someone needed that mold free for the next pour.
So ask a direct question. How many pours per mold per day are planned for my order, and how many does the same mold do in a slow month? If the two numbers are far apart, your bulk will cure less than your sample did. That one question tells you more about real risk than any wall of framed paperwork.
Filler is where the margin quietly hides
Cast polyresin is resin plus mineral filler plus pigment. Push the filler ratio up and cost drops, weight climbs, and the piece turns brittle at every thin section: the rim of a tumbler, the corner of a tray, the top lip of a resin trash can. The surface goes flat too, because a filler-heavy body sands differently and drinks more topcoat. Sample and bulk get quoted against the same drawing. They do not always get the same mix.
The defense here is physical, and any buyer can run it. Weigh five pieces from the approved sample lot and write the average down. Weigh five from every production shipment after that. Drift means the mix moved. You won’t get a formula sheet out of most suppliers, and you do not need one, because the scale reports the change for you.
Parting lines show who really did the hand work
Every cast piece carries a parting line where the two halves of the silicone mold met. Killing that line is manual labor: knock it back, sand it, feather it, respray. Slow, dull, invisible when done well. It’s the single most common step skipped on a lot that is running behind. On stone, travertine and terrazzo finishes the line is far worse than on a plain color, because it cuts straight across the vein pattern and reads as a scar under the raked light of a bathroom vanity.
Check the places nobody photographs. Run a fingernail around the inside rim of a tumbler. Turn a soap dish over. Look into the inner corner radius of a resin service tray, where a sanding block physically cannot reach. Ten random pieces clean in those three places means the finishing line is real and staffed. Why the first sample always beats the shipment
A first-article sample gets made by the best hand-finisher in the building, out of a fresh mold, with no clock running. Bulk gets made by whoever is on shift, out of a mold that has already given up some of its crispness. Silicone molds age. Edges soften, fine texture flattens, and the pebble grain embossed into leather-look polyresin pieces gets shallower with every pull. Late-run parts are genuinely different objects from early ones.
Two questions follow from that. How many pulls does this mold get before it is retired, and was my sample cast from the production mold or from a sample mold? Prototype samples are sometimes hand-built or poured from a one-off, which means the thing you approved never existed on the line. Then keep a retained sample: one piece, marked and sealed by both sides, sitting in a drawer. When a shipment argument starts, that sealed piece ends it in a minute.
Color codes do not survive a filled resin system
Here is the mistake almost every new buyer makes. They send a color code and consider the color specified. Filled polyresin does not behave like ink on paper. The mineral filler is off-white to grey, the resin ambers slightly as it cures, the topcoat adds a cast of its own, and workshop temperature shifts the final value between a January pour and a July pour. Same recipe, different result.
Work in physical chips instead. Approve a target chip, then approve a lighter limit chip and a darker limit chip, and write into the contract that shipment color must land between them. Sets sharpen the problem, because a six to twelve piece bathroom set is cast in different molds on different days. Pack the pieces randomly and one warm-toned bottle ends up beside a cool-toned tray, and the whole vanity looks off. Ask for batch-matched set packing. That costs the factory sorting labor, which is exactly why it doesn’t happen unless you put it in writing.
Factory or trader? Ask who holds the mold
Ask who physically holds the mold for your item and where it is stored. A factory answers on the spot, offers to carry the phone camera into the mold room, and can show your item number written on the mold itself. A trading company says a partner workshop keeps it, then goes quiet for a day.
The second test is better still. Ask for a two-millimeter change on one dimension. A real maker comes back with a mold modification cost and a number of working days, because the master pattern and the silicone are in the building. A middleman has to go ask, and the reply arrives vague. Third test: ask what the scrap rate is on your specific shape and why. A casting supervisor answers with something concrete, such as air traps under a flat top rim, pinholes on a tall vertical face, or bubbles from pouring too fast into a deep narrow cavity. Nobody who has never poured that part can invent that answer.
The questions that pull honest answers
Vague questions get marketing back. Process questions get truth, because describing real work is easier than inventing plausible work. Ask where the stone vein is applied, in the mold with the first coat or sprayed on at the end. That matters, since a top-sprayed vein disappears the first time housekeeping scuffs it and pale body shows through. Ask how long a topcoat flashes off before pieces are stacked, because stacking early prints carton marks into the finish. Ask whether the inside bottom of wet items is sealed, not only the outside; a soap dish sits in standing water every single day and unsealed resin drinks it. Ask what holds the felt pads on the base and how that adhesive behaves through a humid coastal summer. Unglamorous questions. They decide whether the amenity boxes and trays in a guest room survive their first year.
What to check the day the container lands
Open cartons from different pallet positions, never just the top layer. Rock every tray on a flat table. Run the fingernail test along rims and corners. Compare ten pieces to the sealed retained sample under one light source, not two. Weigh five pieces. Then look at the packing itself: individual foam or pulp trays mean somebody thought about transit, while loose pieces sharing a carton mean nobody did. Cast resin breaks in shipping far more often than it breaks in hotels.
